Bible in a Year Preview

Setting a goal of reading the entire Bible in 365 days is a great way to motivate yourself to do the most life-changing thing ever!  What a great New Year’s resolution!  Reading through to the end, you will discover the most wonderful purpose in your life.  And on every day leading up to that, you will discover God’s love woven through thousands of years and carried through many generations.

Purpose of the Bible

As you are reading, you will see God’s vision for humankind unfold.  Is there drama? Yes!  There is murder, affairs, deception, envy, and so much more.  That may have caught your attention, but evil is what God wants us to overturn.  He wants to conquer it by showing us His righteous ways via the Bible’s timeless accounts from which we can learn how we should live.  It is full of true ancient stories, radical conquests, redemption, miracles, beautiful healing poetry, and most importantly, extreme love.  That’s what the Bible is: a love story for mankind, from our heavenly Father, to us, every one of His children.

By the way, the Bible is the #1 bestseller of all time, with an estimate 5-7 billion copies.  Look it up!  About 80 million copies are printed every year.

Here is the format for this great feat: You will have a daily reading assignment posted by 5 a.m. (I use the schedule from the One Year Chronological Bible NLT.)  After each days’ reading, I comment on interesting passages and ask questions about confusing or complicated parts.  They are answered by Rob Fields, who studied Christian Education at Asbury Seminary and currently teaches Biology in the Orlando area.

Choose the best version for you

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to invest in a good Bible.  There are so many translations to choose from that it would be wise to ask a pastor or mature Christian for their recommendation.  When you have your list of versions to consider, log onto biblegateway to see which version you like best.  Type a verse in the search bar to compare.  Under the search bar to the left is an icon that is two offset pages.  You can click on it four times to view a total of five translations side by side.  Click on the pulldown to the right of each version to select a different one.  Bible Gateway offers more than sixty versions.  Although the different versions tell the same basic story, some can use too much interpretive liberty. My favorites are, in this order: NLT, NIV, NASB, ESV, ISV. (It is also fun to occasionally refer to more than one version to understand more of a certain passage than you would only using one. This article recommends doing just that.)

Also, choosing a “study Bible” is extremely useful.  Good study Bibles have synopses for each book and lots of footnotes to help explain confusing language, customs, culture, etc.  Remember, the Bible starts out with accounts that are roughly 3,000 years old.  Because I am a bit OCD, especially about doing things in order, I use a chronological version.  It is the same text as a traditional Bible, just tweaked a bit to be organized chronologically.  To gain more insight, I am supplementing it with the NLT Study Bible.

All and Always Jesus and Samaritan woman

ALL and ALWAYS

When deciphering the Bible, almost every word packs a hefty meaning, much more than their face value. Small, seemingly insignificant words can leave me with a feeling of awe and wonder at God’s power and enormity. Every time I am reminded of one of those deep meanings, I revel in how much God loves me and every single person on this entire planet — all 8.05 billion. Proverbs 30:5 (NLT) says: Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to ALL to who come to him for protection.

Let’s take a look at the common words ALWAYS and ALL.

Always

love rules t-shirt Back Livin' LIght short-sleeve Christian T-shirt Ice blue. Mark 12:30-31 Love Lord neighbor command
Jesus told us two over-arching rules to remember and they both involve love. Mark 12:30-31 says to LOVE YOUR GOD and LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR. No other commandments are greater than these!

When Jesus commissioned the disciples in Matthew 28:20, He said, “And be sure of this: I am with you ALWAYS, even to the end of the age.” In all of those times when we don’t think we can handle our stress, we absolutely can because Jesus is with us ALWAYS — in every second of our lives. And because He is strong and right beside us, we know we are supported 200 percent and we will not fail in doing His will. We just need to realize that He IS HERE for us!

With respect to our Lord and all He is, Psalm 105:4 (NIV) reminds us to “ALWAYS” see Him in whatever we are doing, thinking, saying. “Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face ALWAYS.” When we do this, we put our selfish desires aside and do God’s will. In everything we do, we should see God’s hands all over it.

All

The other word that needs more attention is ALL. When I read Deuteronomy 6:5: “Love the Lord your God with ALL your heart and with ALL your soul and with ALL your strength.” I have read this verse hundreds of times and thought, “I got it, I will do my best to love God a lot.” Then I realized that ALL doesn’t mean “a lot,” it means 100 percent. 100 PERCENT!!!

That means when God is telling you to help someone with a flat tire on a Friday night after work, you do it. If he’s telling you to give up your Saturday golf game to help a widow with yard work, you do it. If you have negative thoughts toward someone, you change them to positive thoughts and pray for them. If you see someone walking along with arms loaded down with shopping bags, give them a ride. That’s right. In a world where we are worried about our safety, you still help. Do these things and watch your happiness grow. You may think that giving up something will be hard. It is, but what you will find out is that God gives back.  Colossians 3:23-24 (ESV) says,“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”  And, helping someone will actually help your mental health: It feels good to do good!  Hats off to those people who give up their entire lives to serve God by serving others.

Again, God uses ALL in Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT), “Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in ALL you do, and He will show you which path to take.” Here God is reminding us that our ALL is to Him exclusively. ALL does not include our own understanding. If we give our every day lives to God, He will guide us through choices, big or small. And you will be surprised at how pleased you are to do His will. His will is good!

Both

1 Thessalonians 5:15 (NLT) employs both ALL and ALWAYS together.  “See that no one pays back evil for evil, but ALWAYS TRY to do good to each other and to ALL people. This verse gives us a little grace because ALWAYS is followed by TRY. God knows we are human and cannot be perfect followers all the time.  However, as believers, He expects us to try our best. How about making it a goal to show grace to everyone, just like we are given grace from above?

You can read through the Bible quickly to understand the basics of God’s Word, but if you slow down and linger on Scripture, you will experience the bounty of God’s love in ordinary words. Make it a challenge to dissect every seemingly insignificant word of Scripture and you will unveil a deeper, more fulfilling meaning than you could ever imagine.  Roses are beautiful, but if you stop and smell them, you find a whole new level of delight.

Follow Jesus and He will show you how to bring other’s to the light and love of God. Matthew 4:19 reads: “Jesus said, ‘Follow Me and I will make you fishers of people.'”

Last Sunday, Pastor Dan Lacich at Oviedo City Church told us the story of how he came to Christ. The story went like this: Back in high school, he wanted to go to the senior prom. The problem? He wasn’t a senior. In order to go to the prom and the all-night after party, he would have to get asked. So his senior friends helped him find a girl and identified Holly, who was cute, unattached, and most importantly, a senior. Dan proceeded to ask her to dinner and a movie the next weekend. She said, “sure,” and in turn, she asked him to a Bible study that Wednesday.

One simple invite

Accepting her invitation was the beginning of the rest of his new life. Since then, he has been a pastor at several churches and took two of our amazing church’s pastors under his wing. He has written several books and started the OCC Institute, a series of classes to help grow our congregation’s Bible knowledge. The Institute is in the midst of a 10-year endeavor to study the entire Bible.  It is attended by 100-150 each week.

Just how many people has Dan brought to Christ?  And to think about the multiplying effect — every person who Dan brought to Christ has themselves brought many, many more people into the church.  All I can think to say is: WAY TO GO HOLLY!  All it takes is a simple invite.  We don’t have to feel responsible for making people believe in God.  We just have to point them in the direction, either by action or word and God will take care of the rest.

Weed out sin, Backyard jungle of weeds

Weed out sin

Weed out sin Hurricane Ian
Hurricane Ian changed our backyard features to a crond — where our creek fused with our pond. Standing on our back deck, I felt like I was on Noah’s ark.

I have had a lot of interaction with weeds thanks to having a small jungle in our backyard.  We bought a house in Central Florida on a creek where the backyard had been “let go.” We tore through the canopy of vines, pulled a bajillion weeds several times and laid nice sod which, a year later, was blanketed in a couple feet of sand thanks to the 500-year flood that came with Hurricane Ian. The sand lasted several months giving us quasi beach conditions until spring came and sprouted a nice crop of weeds. Ian also decided for us that it was time to replace our 40-year-old decaying deck.

Prepping our yard for its makeover is when I spent hours and hours with weeds and discovered they are actually fascinating, offering a palette of personalities.  I am not interested in their scientific or even common names, but in their characteristics. They come in every size and personality imaginable — tall, wide, ground huggers and some that leave you with “gifts.”

My experience with them inspired me to write about how I see our lives played out in nature. Weeds are something that is not desired, which reminds me of sin. Like weeds, sin comes in so many forms. We need to recognize that in order to have a nice lawn that is pleasing and representative of a Christ-filled life, we need to clear out the undesirable, dark parts of our lives.

Tall and terrifying

The first kind of weeds are the ones that are most noticeable. They are tall and a bit terrifying, like substance abuse, adultery, physical violence, etc. For the most part, the world agrees that they are easily tagged as sins. Taking one of those babies out, makes a huge difference in your life.

Take out the easy ones

Then there are those that are very bushy and super easy to pull out.  Those are great because even though they literally take a square foot of space, with one easy pull, you clear a satisfying piece of ground.  Think of something you can grab hold of out of your life and it makes such a difference. This isn’t always easy to identify, but if you are feeling stressed, you have the “busy” quality.  Maybe it’s clearing up some time for others, like getting off social media and helping your neighbor or co-worker.  Or giving some time to fellowship with God, tune in to the Holy Spirit or reflect on Jesus’ love for us.  Suddenly, you feel lighter because time does not have a grip on you: It no longer hijacks your productivity. Maybe it’s getting rid of something that costs you money that you really don’t need. Now your budget is freer so you can pay off debt, save, give a little more to charity or others who are financially struggling.

Weed out sin sneaky snake weed
Some weeds snake along the ground, going unnoticed as the take root again and again.

Sneaky snakes

The ground huggers are the most menacing! They lay low and run, trying to stay inconspicuous, but very effective. They reroot and keep going and going. These sins are not identifiable on the surface, but they do lead to unsettled living. They may be lying to others, gossiping, unintentional bragging, jealousy, quiet prejudices, really anything that isn’t too glaring or that the world doesn’t deem overtly wrong.   These sins can subtly rule your life to where you don’t let loving others in.  They can crawl into your children, affecting your family for many, many generations (sins of our fathers).  It can also infiltrate any group — friends, coworkers, neighbors, even a nation.  In weeding, these are definitely the hardest for me to deal with.

Bombs

In Central Florida, we have an invasive plant known as the air potato.  They are vines that have big heart-shaped leaves, climb up trees and produce fruit — potatoes that grow along the vine and fall to the ground to start another plant.  This models the sin that drops a bomb — it feels like it comes out of nowhere!  The leaves are attractive, heart-shaped, easy to look at.  However, they climb and choke out a tree and keep dropping more sin — the potatoes — to spread it’s vileness.  The sins that come to mind are lust and greed.  Maybe you look at someone you are attracted to, but know it couldn’t possibly go anywhere or cause you to sin, but you give it a opening to come into your life and it digs in deep.  Lust can lead to divorce which can permeate into how your children look at marriage.  Also greed, which is lusting after money.  You see money dangling in front of you and do anything to get it including, unintentionally but knowingly, hurting others, even your friends and family.  Like air potato plants, lust and greed are highly toxic and invasive!

Dog with stickies
Some weeds offer little gifts that are very irritating and can cause us to be bitter.  Jilly did not appreciate her sticky situation!

Shake ‘em off

Then, there are the frustrating ones that have burs or sticky seeds on them. Barely touching them, you get covered. These are little things you struggle with constantly — dealing with traffic, having paperwork pile up, feeling overwhelmed by errands, chores and bills.  These are not all sins, but things we can get bitter about. They are part of life.  If we don’t take care of them, we will keep collecting them until we are covered. These kind of weeds also remind me of social media.  We can easily get wrapped up in all the tidbits of information and influences, that we let them take over our priorities which can slowly destroy our lives.

Turn yourself over to God

The great thing about all of these weeds is that they can be ripped out! Just like Jesus said that if something causes you to sin, then get rid of it (Matthew 5:29-30). We can profess our belief in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but still let weeds grow. It’s not until we also obey what God says, follow Jesus’ example and listen to the Holy Spirit that our yard becomes beautiful and attractive to others. If people see all of your weeds, they won’t want to believe anything you say, including being a Christian, because the weeds show you aren’t living a righteous life. If your soul is cared for properly by working hard to keep the weeds out, others will be drawn to that beauty and get a glimpse of the comfort you feel and confidence you exude by following Jesus.

This means continuously obeying God’s word, keeping Jesus’ love in your heart, and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you instead of trying to control your life yourself.  The Bible warns you about potential threats, Jesus’ life illustrates battling weeds of sin and the Spirit helps identify and deal with weeds. If we have a good foundation — or “sod” in our analogy — we can keep the weeds at bay. The goal is to show others how beautiful your soul is so they will want that fulfilling life for themselves and create their own immaculate lawn.

Sorry if this weed analogy is a bit cringy.  But, go pull some weeds and you will see what I’m talking about.  It’s very satisfying to toss them into a yard waste can and have them hauled away.  Do you see the analogy here?  Because of Jesus’ willingly sacrificing Himself on the cross, He tossed our sins away, making us Holy.  Thank you, Jesus!!!

Jesus as Gambler Man on train from Unsplash.com

Jesus as ‘The Gambler’

For a reason I can only attribute to the Holy Spirit, “The Gambler” made known by Kenny Rogers in 1978, was incessantly streaming through my head.  I was thinking about how I need to start using email to start a Christian community with my brand, and then, pop, the Gambler began playing.  As I was singing it, I could only think of it as having a sit-down with Jesus himself as the Gambler. Yes, I know Jesus would not likely drink hard liquor, smoke cigarettes or gamble … well maybe for souls. Let’s see.

Two strangers meet “on a train bound for nowhere,” meaning God can find you anywhere.  Even though He is always there, He may not be noticeable through the noise of your life until you have nothing left.  The Gambler (Jesus) notices a lost soul who is “out of aces.”  He stares out into the darkness with the Lost Soul and shares that he makes a living of reading people’s faces.  He knows what they are about by the look in their eyes with the life they are dealt.  Jesus knows who we are, what we are going through and literally dies to help us through our troubles.

Last drink

The Gambler tells his new friend that for giving up his way of life or all that he has left — the last swallow of whiskey — he’ll show him the way.  The Lost Soul in this song, giving away his last drink, is all ears to the one who drinks/takes his sin.  He takes away our sin so we can be free from the guilt and shame of sin.   Through Him, we can restart our lives, follow Him and live a fulfilling life.

Matthew 16:25-26 NLT— If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?”

Jesus love is for EVERYONE

Like the Gambler — Jesus, in this scenario — Christians put ourselves out there and love people, without knowing the reactions or the results.  You win some, you lose some — “every hand’s a winner and every hand’s a loser.”  Jesus put Himself out there for EVERYONE — those people who would irritate you and me — all the while, knowing his horrific fate, He still went to the cross because He loved us all so much.  From that, He earned his seat at the right hand of Our Father.  Even as He was being mocked and beaten, Jesus showed His undying love by rooting for us, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34a NLT).

Know your cards

The Gambler continues, “If you’re gonna play the game, boy, you gotta play it right.”  “You gotta know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em, (know the proper time to tell people about God, know when to show them) know when to walk away (know when you need to let God do the work), know when to run.”  In the Bible, Jesus tells his disciples to walk away, “If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.”  — Matthew 10:14 NLT

The Gambler continues his advice with not to worry about keeping count of the souls you lose and the souls you save, “They’ll be time enough for counting when the dealing is done” — when Jesus comes to collect the saved.  For now, just keep living for Jesus and sharing the Gospel without worrying about who’s saved and who isn’t.  If you get hung up on counting the winnings — or saved — you waste time that you could have been saving more.

Romans 5:8
Livin’ Light’s T-shirt shows the love Jesus has for us … so much that He died on the cross for our sins. Find this shirt at livinlight.com/shop.

He broke even

And finally, as the Gambler who was there to save the Lost Soul’s life came to the end of his advice, his work was done and he died.  The lyrics say, “He broke even.”  His perfect life was sacrificed for the masses of sinners, even this last one.  For that, Jesus sits next to His Father in heaven, yet another real life example of what is awaiting us should we choose to follow His lead.  In that, the Lost Soul found his ACE — his new loving way of life — something worth hanging on to.

To me, the lyrics in the Gambler are spot on for Jesus.  And, knowing when to hold ’em and fold ’em can be linked to the Holy Spirit — a gift Jesus gave us to guide us.  However, according to songfacts.com (https://www.songfacts.com/facts/kenny-rogers/the-gambler), songwriter Don Schlitz wrote this anthem about his earthly father. Check out the article, it’s quite interesting.  Shel Silverstein is even involved the song’s emergence.

A good lyricist can stir up so much emotion and provoke thought. I am thankful for the talent God has given them. Even though Schiltz did not intend for this song to be about Jesus, I see it clearly. It’s so beautiful and fulfilling how God puts his Message into our world just as He says He does:

Psalm 19:1-2 NLT — The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known.

Romans 1:20 NLT — For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

So, gamble on some people!  Save some lives!  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

SHAKEN

Acts 2: 25-26 NLT:  King David said this about him: ‘I see that the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.  No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises!  My body rests in hope.

But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies.

Greatest love of all. God loves us so much and longs for us to realize his love.

Greatest love of all!

I have read the Bible frivolously. I have breezed through verses, taken It for granted, and to my great loss, not realized the depth of God’s message. I have skimmed Scripture where he describes the enormity of His love for humanity. I always knew He loved deeply, but I have not let the words come alive, digesting and absorbing them into my soul and really letting myself feel the vastness of His love. With the help of the Holy Spirit and some ladies at a Bible study, I have slowed down my reading to where individual words pop off the page making each one more powerful. Now I can better grasp the depth of His love and never cease being amazed at His care for us!

A Passage that has hit me most recently is Ephesians 3:18-19 (NLT): And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Read that again, but slower. Take in every word.

Absolute love

I know that God loves me, but honestly, sometimes I think or say “yada yada yada” because I have heard those verses over and over, much like John 3:16. But now, I read that His love is so amazingly wide, deep and high that we can never fully grasp its size. However, by trying to realize the magnitude of His love, we are gratified and delighted. I think of a universe-size love — totally immeasurable! Try to imagine it and recognize just how much you are fulfilled. It’s a refreshing, peaceful feeling beyond description!

In Romans 8:38 (ESV), God details more specific, absolute parameters of His love, even death. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. NOTHING ELSE IN ALL CREATION.  Try to grasp that!

LOVE front, wood background: This Livin' Light shirt spells out the word Love in nails. From one nail, blood drips forming into hearts. This bold design on a gray, short-sleeved shirt illustrates Romans 5:8
Romans 5:8 says: “God showed His love by sending His Son to die for us while we still sinned.” God’s Son, Jesus Christ, atoned for our sins. This shirt illustrates that with nails spelling out the word LOVE.

Symbol of love

God’s symbol of how much He loves us is in His only Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus was persecuted, severely beaten, hung on the cross, mocked and died as payment for our wrongdoings. He took our punishment so we could be considered holy, clean from sin and worthy of God’s love. That’s how much God and Jesus love us … so much that they made the ultimate sacrifice to give us a way to go to heaven. Romans 5:8 (NLT): But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Because Jesus arose from the dead after three days, we know that even death cannot get in the way of God’s abilities and desires.  He has the power to bring us back to life, like He did with Jesus. He gives us life! A life rich in love, understanding and amazement. He tells us in Scripture that He understands our struggle with sin and knows we cannot be perfect. He is merciful! Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning. Jesus came to show us love. And, John 3:17 NIV: For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Why does God love us? He is the creator of everything, including love. 1 John 4:19 (NET): We love because he loved us first. Moreover, He IS love. That’s one to think about. 1 John 4:16b (NLT): God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

Love like Jesus

Front of Livin' Light's "Follow the Teacher" T-shirt on stone wall. On a short-sleeved, navy shirt, a school of light blue fish are following the big fish, Jesus with the word's "Follow the Teacher" in the middle of the school. Matthew 4:19.
Follow Jesus and He will show you how to bring other’s to the light and love of God. Matthew 4:19 reads: Jesus said, ‘Follow Me and I will make you fishers of people.’

Jesus is our role model and we should reciprocate His love for us by loving others. John 13:34 (NLT): So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. And just how much should we love others? Matthew 22:39b (NLT): Love your neighbor as yourself.

By loving others, we put aside our selfishness and make others a priority. In a recent Bible class, my pastor summed up loving others like this: If you don’t tell others about being saved, you must not like them very much because their afterlife may be nothing but anguish, to say the least. Telling others is something I need to work on! 1 Corinthians 10:33b NLT: I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved.

Loving others is so freeing, especially when they reciprocate. As Christians, we know that with deep love, comes understanding and forgiveness. So, when I apologize after I say something hurtful to a fellow Christian, he or she knows I am sincerely sorry and they forgive me just as Jesus did. There is peace. Ephesians 4:32 (ESV): Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV): Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

What does love look like?

Love conquers all! Listen to this next passage where God describes what love looks like. Feel your mind and body relax in its assurance. Corinthians 13:4-7 (ESV): Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

God is with us, always

God’s love goes beyond giving us a way to Him through Jesus Christ. He gives us Himself, the Holy Spirit, who is a gift for all of those who believe that Jesus is God’s Son. Because it’s nearly impossible to memorize the whole Bible, God gifts us the Holy Spirit to guide us. John 14:26 NASB: But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you. Ezekiel 36:26 NLT: And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.

The Holy Spirit, God Himself, directs us to righteousness. His voice is distinctive. It’s the one that tells you to do the right thing. Romans 8:6 (NLT): So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. And, luckily, God tells us that He is greater than anything, so with Him, we are fortified, protected, well. 1 John (4:4) NIV: You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Soul resolution

Soul resolution

It’s that time of year when we start contemplating our lives and how we are going to better ourselves in the coming year.  Many of those resolutions come in the form of getting fit.  I have been a passenger on that train many, many times.  And all of those marketers selling products to make us perfect don’t help!

We hear:
• Work out every day
• Cut out all sugar
• Get eight hours of sleep
• Drink eight glasses of water
• Supplements, supplements, supplements

Those are all common New Year’s resolutions we vow in order to make ourselves better, pursuing body perfection.  Of course, most of us should have a daily dose of exercise, especially if we have a stationary lifestyle.  A healthy diet and working out are amazing for the heart, body, and can even balance the mind.  But for the soul, we need to workout in a different realm.

For the last couple years, instead of resolving to better my physical body, I focused on goodness.  Every day, I made it a point to read my Bible and do something nice for someone.  I was on track for a couple weeks and then, those priorities fell to menial tasks that were never meant to invade my resolutions.

Perfection is out of reach

So my quest to achieve a more loving heart happened, but not every day.  How could I be that disciplined anyway?  No person on earth is perfect, especially me!  Absolute perfection is reserved solely for God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Psalm 92:15 says: They will declare, “The Lord is just!  He is my rock!  There is no evil in him!”  So, we should take our cues from the One who has no faults!

Since God is perfection and we have His Word as a role model, we should look at the world as He does … with love.  God does not see the wrinkles in your face, the muffin top, the hair that’s out of place;  He sees your soul, whether it’s beautiful, stressed, meek, sad, joyful, etc.  1 Samuel 16:7: The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

By following God, you experience The Good Life. By drinking in His Word, you are fulfilled with goodness and love as described in Proverbs 23:5-6. Your cup will not only be full, it will overflow!

A truly better you

So, if you are going to make a resolution, make one that brings joy to both your heart and others’ hearts to where you love everyone … to where you look at someone and don’t judge them or size them up.  Look at them and love them!  Say, “Hi, how are you?” and rely on God to give you some way to strike up a conversation with them.  Romans 12:9-10 (NLT) says:  Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.  Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.

When we connect with others and see that they are human beings, created by God, just like ourselves, we make the world more connected.  The closer we

become, the more love we share and the less we quarrel.  That will make a better world for everyone.  So, use this New Year’s resolution to find the love in your heart and offer it to others.

Bonus verses

Romans 12:2 (ESV): Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Luke 16:15 (ESV):  And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”

Creation credit goes to God

Creation credit goes to God

As you are flying several miles above the earth, have you ever thought: Just how in the world does a hundreds-of-tons metal ship get its huge body off the ground and stay there?  And, how amazingly intelligent are all of those experts from the Wright brothers to today’s flight engineers?  All of that shared information has gotten millions of people around the world millions of times.  My mind went to how many rivets are required for the metal plates so they don’t fly off going 500 mph.

How far the world has come in the 20th century!  To think that the Wright brothers flew their plane in 1903 and planes were used in war as early as 1911.  Today, we have spacecraft going to who knows how many parts of the universe.  And, satellites relaying so much information.  I wonder what is next!  I think, in my lifetime, that car manufacturing may be nearly obsolete and the Jetson’s scenario of hovercraft will be the norm.  Hopefully, I am not around for teleporting.

Had to be a mastermind

So there has been some pretty impressive thought processes and trials and errors to figure out air travel.  Now, let’s take a look at things we did not create.  Consider gravity, wind direction speed, and air currents, storms and ice!  Aircraft engineers have to address all of these factors.  I took a class where we talked about the design of the earth and how it just didn’t magically happen.  Something intelligent had to be there to start it.  Like the parts of the aircraft are tagged for specific functions, one cell can’t just decide to tell itself that it will be lung tissue in a mammal or a component of dirt, air or water.  For any kind of order to happen, many scientists are now saying that the universe had to be made by a master creator.

Think how the air we breathe is a perfect combination of gases.  Air, combined with food and water, give us what we need to survive.  Animals are perfectly paired with their surroundings, giving them shelter, drink and food.  I am not a scientist whatsoever, but I do know that there is so much harmony between life that there is no way that all of it could have come into being without the most incredible genius at the helm.

And, the Bible says that humans are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27).  So, if humanity’s scruples are a fragment of God’s creative power, just imagine His intelligence!  Not only did God engineer the world, but also our galaxy and universe and who knows what else.  Nehemiah 9:6b: You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host …

The owl conjures attention, but acknowledges that wisdom come from above, as stated in Proverbs 2:6: The Lord gives wisdom. From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Innate knowledge

He also put knowledge of Himself in every person.  The tough part is just recognizing Him, especially if we have not grown up in Christianity or were even discouraged from it.   Romans 1:20 (NLT) says: For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities — His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.  And, not only can we see a marvelous creation, but God managed to have people across thousands of years and thousands of miles relate stories to us that tell of Him and His plan for redemption.

Evidence of God

God’s signature is on so many things.  There is evidence all around, but we can go to creation in Genesis 3 to see concrete examples.  In verse 16, women get their curse from the Fall (NIV): I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children.  Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.  How many times do we want to tell our husbands what to do?  And, how many centuries have men largely ruled over women?

In verse 17-19, He addresses men: Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.  It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.  By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground.  Now, most of us reading this are not farmers or hunter-gatherers, but still, we struggle to make a living to put food on the table.

Furthermore, when God confronted Adam and Eve for their sin, they were trying to hide from God in verse 10.  Where did we get that innate reaction that when we are caught wronging someone, we hide our heads, curl up and avoid the person we disappointed?  This is the arrival of shame and guilt into our world.

That all sounds a little daunting.  But, in His loving kindness, God cares for each one of us by giving us His Word, that if we follow it, we will be fulfilled.  When you contemplate the world and just how incredibly awesome it is, you recognize the Artist’s hand and realize just how much He loves us that He created such a magnificent place for us to inhabit and enjoy!

Giver of Joy The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem, where the Savior, Jesus Christ, was born.

Giver of Joy!

Front of Livin' Light's Christmas LIFE shirt. The design is on a navy, long-sleeved shirt and shows a gift wrapped in red with green ribbon for Christmas. The wrapping has a large word, "LIFE", on it in bright green. The tag on the gift says, "Love, God."
John 3:16 is the most well-known Bible verse of all time. Out of God’s grace, mercy, and love, He gave us His Son as ransom for our sins, in turn, giving us eternal life.

Wrapping up the last Christmas presents, I thought how absolutely wonderful is this season of giving!  People experience so much joy out of finding the just the right gifts that will make those they care about happy.  I saw my husband put something in a stocking with a big smile on his face.  I too have a few surprises for him!

Joy starter

Then, I think about who started all of this joyful giving.  God did!

John 3:16 NIV — “For God SO LOVED the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”

There is no gift more delightful than that!  What a legacy God left that we can all have such joy in making others happy.

Inconceivable effect

We can make those in our family, friend and work circles happy. It feels even better knowing that we can help others outside our domain through giving to missions.  Now just imagine multiplying that times millions and that is how much joy God and His heavenly realm felt by loving all of us through the gift of Jesus Christ, the best and first Christmas gift ever, the source of eternal joy!

Luke 2:13-14 NLT — Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others — the armies of heaven — praising God and saying,  “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.”
Thank you, God!
